Gourd Jack o’ Lantern

Gourd Jack o’ Lantern

Instead of carving a pumpkin for Halloween decorating, consider using a dried gourd. It will take some time and effort, but it will reward you with being able to use it for years to come. Of course you can grow and dry your own gourds, but you can also easily find already dried gourds at craft and floral supply stores.

Here, a bottle gourd carved with two faces and a large hole on the bottom allow it to stand up without wobbling. A wash of paint and stain gives it a nice autumnal glow. A small light or an LED candle for a realistic flicker effect will create a spooky sight on Halloween night.
